The District of Columbia is where Washington D.C. is. Back when they were deciding the nation's capital of the United States of America, they didn't want the states to throw a fit if they weren't where the White House was. So the government (or what we did for political matters back then) named a piece of unmarked land as Washington D.C., or the District of Columbia. That's the the D.C. stands for on Washington.

This level of ignorance is frightening.

My 7 year old grandson has been begging to go to D.C. for vacation instead of Disney World. (!!!) Now, he didn't know where it is, exactly, so we looked it up in the atlas. He knows our neighboring states, so he was able to find it by looking at a map. I asked him what he thought was in Washington, and he answered, "Statues, museums, and the Capitol."

I don't know how old this poster is, or how old the respondent is who answered Delaware, but if you are over the age of 10, and from the US, it is a real shame that you have no idea where the US capital is.
