I'm a med student in training at the University of Montreal. This is only my personal thoughts backed up by personal experience and some scientific articles I've read here and there.

It's not the laughing that makes you live longer; it's the personality of someone who laughs a lot that might heighten the chances of making you live longer. Here are the things that kill you: stress, unhealthy lifestyle and bad habits. People who are able to lower their stress level are bound to live longer. Laughter is most of the time a good way of doing this. I say most of the time because some people laugh, only to hide a great internal stress.

I give you an example concerning dreams. A high percentage of people who get cancer remember having a dream that includes representation of cancer cells going wild inside their bodies. Here are the facts: everyone has cancer cells that slowly kills you, but you also have defence systems that will fight them off. If you're constantly stressed (because you take things too seriously) and cannot maintain a healthy mental state, you will not be able to fight off the cancer cells because your energy is being used elsewhere.

But watch out for the other factors: healthy lifestyle and good habits. I don't want to make a false induction, but my personal belief is that many people who take life too easily (laugh things off too easily) don't take care of themselves as much as serious people.

My personal tip is to find a good balance. Laugh and have fun in life, be serious about your health and stop any bad habits like drugs, excessive alcohol, smoking...

Man! some of the answers make me think that all drug addicts would be laughing 24/7 non-stop to get high, not true...

I'm not sure if laughing makes you live longer, I couldn't find any scientific tests done on the subject. However, there are situations when laughing can save your life..., such as when the neighborhood gangsta' starts saying some stuff when passing by with your girl - laugh can definitely difuse the situation (is not tested either).

Also, we as humans, have the special ability (among other strange things) to laugh. I don't see dogs laughing, or cats... they don't live too long. What about Eagles, they must be laughing all their 100+ years. Anyway, laughing is just a good feeling, not a new medicine - I say.

Laughing hard is a form of exercise. Exercise helps lower blood pressure, keep blood sugars under control, relieve stress and etc. That is my best guess on why laughing helps make you live longer.

Laughing causes your brain to release endorphins...these chemicals act like morphine to your system. They help your body relax, relieves pain, and elevates the good neurochemicals in your brain. All of this has been measured scientifically. Stress and negative emotions cause harm to our cells, and laughing helps them heal.
So laugh your way along with good nutrition to a longer life.

Negative stress causes harm to the body.
Laughing relieves tension and is therefore a relaxant.
Human cells being relaxed, through laughing, may live longer.
So, have good laughs every day .... and live up to 100 years!!

There is evidence that it does make you live longer. When you are happy your brain releases good chemicals called dopamine and epinephrine which make you feel happier. That is also linked to when it is sunny out people are happier then when it is rainy and gloomy.
