Most affairs are about what's in your heart...if you're in a relationship and your giving the majority of your time and thoughts to someone online, you can easily cross the line into disrespecting your partner. Put yourself in your partners shoes and think about how you would feel if your partner was doing the things you're wondering about.

Yes of course it can.... Alot of people leave their spouses for other people that they chat with and meet online... I feel that is cheating and an affair and ultimatley leads to breakups and divorces in marriages.
