I live in Ohio and am interested in purchasing a handgun for sport shooting. Target and range shots only. I have no desire to hunt anything. So where do I go from here? How do I choose the right gun for me?

I feel it is my responsibility to educate myself on the laws. All to often, wrong information is passed along due to miscommunication or a misunderstanding of the law. Any sites that anyone can suggest will be greatly appreciated as I am striking out on my own.

If you have little to no experience with firearms, especially pistols, find someone to mentor you. I would start with a decent quality .22 pistol. A good .22 can be used for plinking, informal and even formal target shooting, and some gun games. Many bowling pin matches have a stage for .22s.

As far as firearms law goes. Check out the aforementioned locations but also look at the site I'll put a link to below. The site will have some good information on your state's laws and will have links to the official state's web site where the exact laws are posted.

Ohioans for Concealed Carry maintain a set of forums. You might find posting questions there more useful.

The Ohio Revised Code is available online. But figuring out what is legal from a list of what is illegal (and written by lawyers) has its own challenges.

If you are 21 and can pass the federal background check, you can purchase a handgun. Most of the large cities have stricter laws, but those laws will be eliminated by HB 347 which goes into effect mid March.

Any gun shop in Ohio can help you with the laws as each state varies in its own laws. They all have to comply with the BATFE.Start with a target 22 caliber pistol, then you can go bigger if you want after you're proficient.

well if you have no desire for anything then dont get it.Except if you have a target or something bothering you get a gun you can handle.Maybe a pistol or magnum since the power of shooting it isn't like a shotgun or machine gun.
