The 4.0L I-6 is an exclusive-to-Jeep engine. It was never offered in any Dodge, Plymouth or Chrysler models. They used Chrysler V6's whenever Chrysler applied a six-cylinder engine.

Jeep introduced their 4.0L I-6 engine in 1987 Cherokees, Wagoneers and Comanche mid-sized pickup. I believe provided 170 HP.

Sometime in the early 1990's, they made a few changes and called it the H.O. (high output) version, with roughly 190 HP. According to some reading I've done, the early H.O. engines had shorter pistons which knocked around, so-called piston slap. That took about a year or two before they fixed it.

In the mid-1990's, when the Grand Cherokee was introduced, Jeep made the I-6 the GC's base engine. In the later 1990's, the I-6 was also available in the Wrangler (until then, the Wrangler used the similar 4.2L I-6 engine.)

The 4.0L I-6 finally went out of production around 2004 when Jeep switched over to a Chrysler V6 engine in the Wrangler. (The 4.0L availability in Grand Cherokees had ended a few years earlier.)

Well, the 4.0 litre Jeep engine was used only by Jeep, there is also a 4.2 litre version. Most recycling yards have the books or computer program to check for inter-changeability for engine and parts.
The fastest, least expensive way, is to get the best used engine you can find and install it. If you have the skills, you could rebuilt but the new parts would probably be as much as a used engine.

Go to www.car-part.com...this website will help a lot...
If memory serves me correctly, the I6's only came in the Jeeps. Any Jeep with a 4.0L will most likely fit, if the tranny mounts right up...

Call your local wrecking yard. They have a parts interchange ability on their computer.
