The Hustle is a catchall name for several disco dances which were extremely popular in the 1970s. Today it mostly refers to a type of swing dance based on various earlier forms of hustle and similar in style to East Coast Swing, though in the 1970s there was also a line dance called the Hustle. Modern Hustle is sometimes referred to as New York Hustle.
Based on older dances such as the mambo, the Hustle originated in Hispanic communities in New York City and Florida in the 1970s. This was originally a line dance with a Salsa-like foot rhythm, that after some fusion with swing and eventual shortening of the count to "&1 2 3", became the present "New York" Hustle.

Hustle is a form of dance that was popular to do with Disco music in the '70s. If you watch the move "Saturday Night Fever" John Travolta's character talks about the hustle and gives some examples.
Hustle has made a little bit of comeback, although it's usually called "Club Swing" these days. It can use a lot of the same moves as West Coast Swing, but without the syncopation. It's different from the East Coast Swing variants, both in the music it's danced to, and in that the basic moves are done in a line, rather than a curve.

In the 1960's, beginning with the twist and progressing through a dizzying array of other fad dances, people were dancing on their own, perhaps in front of a partner, but without any direct connection. In the mid-to-late 70's came the disco craze, with the partners actually dancing together again. There were several forms of dance grouped together as "hustle," which almost died out in the '80's except in some dance studios and a few areas in the midwest. There has since been a mild resurgence, and if you're interested you can pick up lessons at any American-style ballroom studio.
