Brilliant....vocabulary is extremely important (to me anyway).

If the person is constantly saying things like, "Well aaactually, according to a harvard study, bla bla bla," and always correcting people and wanting to quiz people on what they know so he/she can show off his/her knowledge (I have only met MEN that do this, by the way), my impression is that they are extremely annoying. But if the person is interesting to talk to, not a showoff, and not above having fun, then I just respect that person more for having a great vocabulary. :)

My first impression of someone with an above-average use of vocabulary is that they are probably of above-average intelligence and highly educated, although I realize that may not always be the case. They may just be very well-read. However, sometimes they can come across as obnoxious and verbose, which is just annoying and makes me want to avoid catching their eye at all costs! :)

Trying to hard. If you cannot make yourself understood by the language you choose to communicate with, you are trying to impress. Language is a tool. Sometimes it requires a 1/4" socket wrench sometimes a 2".

Sorry but my impression is not favorable. I wonder if they aren't more concerned with trying to impress everyone with how smart they are instead of trying to communicate. If you're talking to some one presumably you're trying to communicate with them. If so you'll be careful in the words you use.
If you're trying to make and impression thats the impression you'll make.

They either read a lot, are very smart, or they are stuck up and they want to impress somebody.
Depends on the person.

It depends. If they feel the need to drop a 10 letter word when a 3 letter word will do, I tend to think they're a bit affected and sad.
