DO NOT BUY FROM WALMART! Okay so this question is asked a lot and I always answer piano/keyboard. Piano will teach you so much music theory. They are not that expensive. They do not hurt your fingers. They sound good in any type of music. They do not require much maintenance as guitar does (I'm training to repair musical instruments and people rarely bring me pianos, mostly guitars that require 10-50 dollar work.) Pianos will introduce you to music faster than guitar. They will help you with any future instruments. If you look to join a band, there are so many guitarist out there, I could pick up a guitarist with one phone call. A good piano player will always have a spot. Yamaha makes some good keyboards for around 100 dollars. I bought mine for 145, but I bought it with some extras. A 100 dollar acoustic guitar is worth it, especially from Epiphone or Hohner, but an electric at 100 dollars will break down fast and then I'll have to repair it. I started out with piano and moved on to drums, bass, ocarina and guitar. Thanks to the piano, the drums, bass and ocarina were simple to learn, I'm currently learning guitar and its a snap.

You should be spending more time learning Scales and Chords... then you can write your own music instead of playing somebody elses baby. if you just play covers you'll never learn anything. trust me, just trying to help you learn the right way first so you don't have to relearn it later. good luck.
