i have a company party next week, and the dress is cocktail attire. i'm guessing i need to wear a suit for this. does a brown dress shirt go well w/ a black suit (no tie)? i have other color dress shirts, but my nicest shirt is a brown striped (shadow stripes) dress shirt.. would that go well w/ a black suit?

thanks

While you can wear black and brown together, it's a bit bland. Both colors are neutral, but neither one is very festive.

If you want to stick with the brown shirt, since it is your best, try to add some color. You don't have to wear a tie, but you can try a handkerchief or pocket square to brighten it up. Or button covers/studs for the shirt. Or even an interesting belt of some kind. If you're feeling bold, try a scarf around the collar of the jacket. Men do have more choices than just a tie and belt to personalize their outfits.

But honestly, I would go with a different colored shirt. It's the easiest way to look appropriate for the formality of the party, and you don't take any chances of being uncomfortable in clothing styles you aren't used to wearing.

Black suits are evil. Unless you are at art galleries.

Try any other color than brown for the shirt. I am guessing it is a chocolate brown? Some tans can work... it is hard though.

a black suit is the most versatile thing in a mans wardrobe, versatile because you can where anything with it, there is no law that says that you have to wear a tie ether...black matches everything and clashes with nothing, you can even wear brown shoes, i personally prefer black with a black suit...but yes u will be OK wearing a brown shirt with a black suit

NO! Brown and black do not work well together. Try a shirt color that will compliment your eye color. If you have blue eyes, try a blue shirt. Green eyes, green shirt. Brown eyes....anything but a brown shirt. Color coordinate the rest of your accessories as well.

forget everything everyone else has said. black and brown is one of the most sophisticated color combinations and is also one that you don't see very often (as people are trained to think it's a no-no). my all-time favorite (and probably the most widely celebrated) fashion designer, marc jacobs, was quoted as saying that it is his favorite color combination as well. so go with it...i bet at least one person at the party will compliment you.
