The Mayan calender says so, but not being Mayan, I don't think so...December 21, 2012 is the beginning of the 14th epoch according to them. (they also believed that the world will be destroyed by a great flood at that time)...

-no one knows exactly when the world will end. the reason people speculate it ending in 2012 is because scholars studying the ancient Mayan calender have found that 2012 is a special date.the ancient mayan calender doesnt specify what exactly happens in 2012 but scholars believe it is when the mayans thought the world would end.the reason the mayan calender is so reliable is because mostly every other prediction on the mayan calender has been correct, such as full moons, meteor appearances, and eclipses.
-the Mayan calender isnt the only thing that has the world ending on a specific date. Issac Newton(the guy who discovered gravity) studied the bible and predicted the world ending in 2016. other predictors have thought the world is going to end in 2011. so no matter who predicts it, most people do think the world will end in this century.
-still,that doesnt mean it will end.we humans have control over alot of our future.we shouldnt figure out how the world will end,but what we can do to preserve the world.

If you are referring to the asteroid "apophis" coming to destroy us - almost certainly not. Scientists are suggesting only a 1% chance of it striking us now - better than the 3% as of a few years ago.

Asteroid vectors have to be calculated over and over again because of a number of unusual force generating phenomena that can sway their course.

Apophis is probably going to cruise by us at somewhere between 18,000 and 20,000 miles of earth -- this is closer than the moon is to earth.

However, there is a 600meter or so distance where if the asteroid passes through it near the earth it WILL be focused to directly hit the earth like a decade later if nobody does anything about it. That's why its so important to do something early.

It's like getting you car's tires a reverse alignment. Maybe that asteroid is flying straight to hit us, but if we can make it pull to one side then it could miss us. And the farther back we can make it pull one way or another, the farther away from us that we can move it.

I seem to remember another date the world was going to end. That was the year 2000. Either the world has already ended and we don't know it, or the world will end again in 2012.

Astronomically speaking, the only thing I think you might be referring to is an asteroid hitting the earth in 2012. Astronomers thought one might before they knew the asteroid's path very well. They know now the asteroid will pass pretty far from earth. So, yes the earth should still be here in 2012 and beyond.

Misinterpretations: Dont be afraid, tha only thats going to end is the age. The age of Pisces, afterwards we enter into the Age of Aquarius. Not the world, but the age is ending.

If you know someone who really believes that the world will end in 2012, ask them to make a will leaving everything to you. I suspect they will decline that offer.

No, the world will not end in 2012.
