Well first off I need to know what kind of Lap Top it is.. But there are plenty of ways, new processor, memory, or just a good clean out of old files and defragment. Some times its less money just to go out and buy a new one: like maybe a left over from last year at a good price. If your not sure of what you have for a pc then go get Sis Soft Sandra its a kool tool and can tell ya some good info about your pc, http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=177 Chances are if you have to shut down a bunch of Processes to get the thing running have way decent. Then its time for a change.

Max out on RAM it about the easiest thing you can do.
Ctrl+Alt+Delete then and select things and click "End Task". If I remember correct you have to leave Explorer and Systray running. It best to close one at a time and see how things go. If, you close something and a program stop running that you need you may need to restart to get it going again and remember not to End Task on it.
The first link is a simple Process Explorer that you can use to see what everything running is and it a very simple execute program, Download it in a Folder alone so you know where it is, it can close programs too.
The second link is the start page @ Microbutt for other stuff. I just got you the link for the Process explorer so you know where it at. READ what these things do before you just start installing stuff.
What knada242 say below about "msconfig" is what you really need to do to keep stuff from starting on Bootup. You can click the Icon or find in your program files to start the ones you unchecked when you need them.

There is little you can do with a portable. Most of the hardware is fixed so your choices are limited.
You have done the obvious tuning.
You can increase the RAM (up to a point) and you might be able to upgrade the hard drive to a model that is slightly faster.
Ultimately the real way to improve the speed is to get a new model that has a faster processor, a new bus design, a better video chipset and that is about it.
Laptops are not meant to be upgraded as a general rule.

Many things can be done:
If it is XP; type msconfig in your run box, navigate to the startup tab and view what programs are loading that may not be needed.
Use a registry cleaning tool like Ccleaner.
Do you have a lot of programs showing up in your notification bar, if so these are also taking up resources. Change their preferences to only run when you execute them.
A more drastic option that I and many other people do , once a year, is to backup all data and do a complete wipe and reload of windows.
Also make sure to have up to date Anti-spy, and Anti-virus software installed and scan for problems regularly

Get a good spyware program and scan for spyware. Sypbot Search and Destroy is good. How much memory has it got? Anything less than 512MB running XP is going to be a dog.
What programs are running at startup? Check this out by typing msconfig in the run dialog box. (Start/Run). Google the abbreviations for programs you find running there. Uncheck the ones that are not necessary or are spyware.

The obvious answer would be to upgrade it. More RAM is always good.
Other than that, and assuming you've run the standard virus/adware/spyware scanners, I suppose you could get and run a registry cleaning program.
There's also a very nice and extremely useful program floating around out there called EndItAll. You run it and it will close/kill many unnecessary background processes. It used to be free, google it.

Yeah, just move your music and high memory consuming items to a external hard-drive, raise your ram, and run adware and anti-virus removing software on your computer.
You can also get rid of old items, and defragment your C drive

Buy more memory for it. A 512 memory chip runs about $100 and can be purchased at any computer store.

- Defragment your hard drive (easy)
- Add more RAM (easy/moderate, depending on PC maintenance skill and budget)
- Run spyware software (easy, need to buy software)
- Adjust how your computer uses virtual memory & paging files and optimize for the kind of software you use most (hard, you'll need to do more research for advice and instructions - too much to say here)
- Overclock your processor (expert, again you'll need to do more research for advice and instructions)
