ouch,

you may not be completely hopeless. before you get a new pc . . . read the below.

does your computer have a reset button. (usually a tiny button on the front)

if not you might try resetting the cmos jumper on your motherboard (much of the time it's labeled jc3 I believe I'll research this to make sure) usually there are 3 pins with a jumper on the last two. and the jumper looks just like that of a cd-rom or harddrive jumper. (used to set the device as master/slave etc...)

if you find the jumper on the motherboard unplug your computer and touch something metal (this gets of of any static in your body) move it to the 1st and 2nd pins and turn on your computer. it'll seem like nothing happened. touch metal again, unplug your machine again and move the jumper back to the original position and turn your machine on. if that doesn't work you may have damaged your motherboard. if none of that works you may try just removing your card and powering on without it, just to make sure that it isn't a conflict

I agree, make sure the NIC card is removed and reboot. You may be lucky. Happen to me once with a modem card, block card hung up the motherboard buses. When remove the PC booted fine.

If the PC will not boot. Contact a local computer engineer or friend and see if they can connect your hard drive into another PC. If the drive can be seen then transfer the file you need on to external media CD or memory stick.

That will enable you to study for your exam on another PC.

PC problem will still remain. If it still doesn't boot as above then you may be looking at replacing the motherboard or the PSU. A PSU would possibly cost around £20 and new MB £40-50. Your local PC engineer would probably charge about £30 to sort this.

Hope you manage to get something sorted.

Sounds like something is burned out, te infrmation on the hard drive should still be there, if you have another PC you could put the drive in to the other PC to get at it.

You may need a new power supply, a new mother boardor a new processor or all the above. If there was a smell of smoke lok for something blackened to get some idea of what blew.

You may be lucky and it is just a fuse but the smell of smoke sounds bad

That setup can artwork only fantastic. Did you position interior the drivers for the ethernet card you position into the win98 device? It wont artwork without drivers. there is different topics that propose more desirable setup steps even as operating in win98. Like i imagine you should operate the internet connection manually, it would not do exactly it for you want win2000 and above. bypass into administration panel, community connections and spot if the relationship is even indexed. And if so, does it tutor suitable once you plug interior the cable.

You didn't mention if you still have the network card in the computer. If so, turn the computer off and remove it. Then try to boot up again. If it happens to boot up, you're lucky, but may not be able to use that slot again. If not booting, you might have shorted out the motherboard as well.

.
You have an emergency situation.

Did you DEstatic yourself before touching your components inside your computer?

Take your hard drive out, and intall it into another computer, and get your information off...
save it onto external media.

If you are unable to read the hard drive on another computer, it may be gone forever.

If you can read the hard drive, then you need to check your power source to see if it is working.

Also check your NIC to see if it is ok, or you might need to replace it.

In the future, make sure everything is perfect before you restart after working inside your computer.
