Not enough for what they do and the danger they are in. Where I live they start at about 35,000 a year.
I know a guy on the police force for probably 20 years and he's only making a little over $50,000 a year. This is in Oklahoma. I realize other states have higher cost of living and make more. Our minimum wage is only $5.15 and I know it's alot more in other states.
Also the same with prison guards. Around here they start at $7.00 an hour. People working at Subway Sandwiches start at that amount. I think both professions should be making a lot more than they do.

Each year, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes the Occupational Outlook Handbook. It provides all kinds of information about different occupations including salary ranges, educational levels needed for the job, nature of the work and working conditions. It's based on national data so its a reliable baseline.
You can find the entry on Police and detectives here: http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos160.htm
From the handbook:
"According to the International City-County Management Association’s annual Police and Fire Personnel, Salaries, and Expenditures Survey, average salaries for sworn full-time positions in 2004 were as follows:
[The following list the Minimum annual base salary and the Maximum annual base salary]:
Police chief $72,924 $92,983
Deputy chief 61,110 76,994
Police captain 60,908 75,497
Police lieutenant 56,115 67,580
Police sergeant 49,895 59,454
Police corporal 41,793 51,661
Total earnings for local, State, and special police and detectives frequently exceed the stated salary because of payments for overtime, which can be significant. In addition to the common benefits—paid vacation, sick leave, and medical and life insurance—most police and sheriffs’ departments provide officers with special allowances for uniforms. Because police officers usually are covered by liberal pension plans, many retire at half-pay after 25 or 30 years of service."
or search the index for other occupations:

I hope this helps!
