I just saw this movie. It's OK, but much overrated. The story is interesting, but not compelling. Basic facts and figures are ignored. Eastwood never gives you a sense of how many Japanese were on the island. Moreover, he depicts them totally sympathetically, and not the ruthless monsters they were in China, Philippines, Korea and every other country and territory they occupied (not to mention their treatment of American POW's). Japan's Imperial soldiers come across as a bunch of misguided Boy Scouts. That was not the case. I don't condemn Japan or Japanese culture, but that country in the 1920's and 30's was akin to Nazi Germany -- nothing good there.

I don't think it is over rated.

the point of the movie was to show that even sometimes people get stuck in things beyond their control, and all they can hope for is to survive.

I don't think you were paying attention to the movie its self, most of the soldiers were ruthless and driven to do right for their country, but a few were more interested in getting back to the lives they once had.

Yes they were the enemy and a huge % acted in a monstrous way, but even among the enemy you will find people who are still human or capable of separating war from their personal feelings.

You were not supposed to get the grand scope of the battle, you were supposed to see it from the Japanese view, caves, tiny groups shooting out of holes, the view is limited, you know fighting is going on but you don't know where.

My only complaint is there was no time reference, it makes you think the battle was over quickly, when in reality it went on for a month.

I think it was an excellent film, and I am finally glad that I will be able to go see it on a big screen, I only saw it on a rather small independent movie theater screen so I could not immerse my self completely in the film.

No it hasn't been overrated 'yet'. Why? Because most people don't even no about it. The ones who do, like yourself and some pro citics, are not overrating it at all. Maybe you just personally had some high expectations that were'nt met when you actually saw the film. It happens to all of us. I like the things you've pointed out. You probally saved me a few bucks. :-)

Yes, it was overrated. These people bombed us, the attacked us. Why do we always treat the Japanese with kid gloves while we demonize the Germans? These people tried to take over the world, are we forgetting that? Do you know that they don't even teach the Japanese school children about the horrors that they as a country inflicted on other nations? Why don't you show this movie to vets of the Bataan death march and then ask them what they think? If in 60 yrs, some bozo made a similar film sympathetic to the suicide bombers of Sept 11, would the response be the same? Oscar nods?
