Since mp3's were solely based with computers it was a easy transition for Mac to venture into this portable player. Sony on the other hand made players that used general mechanics like lasers and tape heads to play cassettes and cd's. The whole aspect of computer based music wasn't a strong area for Sony as in why it took them so long to bring out a videogame system
and even then most of the first games made for the playstation had already been made prior for mac and pc's. Sony may be big business but it is Mac who was already mainstream with computers and music files via the net and other sharefile networks so when it came to the big shots to get into the whole new portable music player Mac had the technology where other companies had not reached that status and now most companies have mp3 players that run off alot of the same technology that Mac and other companies have capitilized on for cheper pricing but as for space and reliability the Mac Ipod is hands down hard to beat.

Apple is the ONLY company to make an iPod. Perhaps you are referring to a MP3 player?

In that case, Apple was not the first to make one, but they were the first to make them popular. Call it innovative design and clever advertising.

Apple promotes of corporate culture of innovation for survival while Sony has gotten fat and bloated and lost its ability to innovate...that's why PS3 is getting its butt beat by Wii.
