1. Perhaps you haven't totally accepted your sexuality for yourself, and saying it out loud sort of makes it official. (personal experience)
2. You are not sure how the person will react. Will they be positive, or negative? You can never really be sure.
3. You are afraid that the relationship with that person will change and never be the same again and that would be a loss.

From a young age, people are conditioned to lead a so called 'normal' life that consists of nothing out of the ordinary. Little boys are supposed to grow up and meet a college sweetheart, get married in their 20s, have 2.4 children, live in a nice but not overly affluent suburb, have a good job to save for the kids college fund, have their kids in little league and soccer and girl scouts, drive a mini van, and go to church every Sunday.
Anything that threatens this would cause people to question reality.
If there is an older brother that sexually abused his younger sister, it is ignored or kept quiet in order to keep alive the 'perception of perfection'.
If there is a husband who cheats on his wife, it is ignored or kept quiet in order to keep alive the 'perception of perfection'.
If someone is in debt to the point of bankruptcy, it is ignored or kept quiet in order to keep alive the 'perception of perfection'.
... and unfortunately, if a family member happens to be gay, it is ignored or kept quiet in order to keep alive the 'perception of perfection'.
It is hard for gay and lesbian people to say who they are because they do not want to 'rock the boat' and have this 'perception of perfection' fall down and be told that they were the cause. The only time that many gay and lesbian people can do so is when they are prepared to completely leave their family behind and lead their own lives for themselves without trying to keep up the perceptions of perfection that have been expected of them.

First off, because I don't know how to pronounce lebsbian. Lesbian I can pronouce, but since I'm a guy, saying it would be kinda odd.
It's hard because there is a strong social stigma that's still attached to it. Some would still wish you harm knowing you're lesbian or gay.

cuz not every one is like us and u can't make them like u or accept for who u are....
i told the girl i liked that i am gay and that i loved her and she didn't understand me at first but then she e-mailed me cuz that was the only way she could tell me what she did say... but i know that i can't be with her or i know that everything is going to change from her way of seeing and acting....
my parents read my diary when i was 12 and i am gay since i was 11 and it's not ok for me... my mother she keeps thinking that i will get married and she keeps telling me these kinda things that i don't know how to do a meal or my bed things like this and she is always saying this like she ignores the fact that i am gay... she is probably not getting along with it but i don't care at all
real friends will stay next to u supporting u all the way
helping parents will be there to help u with your problems... u r their child and they have to love 4 who u r

A lot of people crave that love that they think they might loose if they admit to being gay/lesbian. Personally i think that you should love me for me or not at all. I also believe that you dont pay my bills of live me life for me so go live your own life. A moto of mine is "If you dont like me f*** you and the people that made you" but thats just me.

I can admit that I like guys a lot better than girls, but for some reason I can't say that I'm gay.

It's a personal part of our life that society pressures us to feel like we have to hide since some consider it to be a bad thing altogether?

It's still out of the "norm" to come out in today's society. Who really wants to be like Rosie O'donnel?

I've always looked at it this way.
Mom, Dad, I'm a heterosexual and I'm porking my girlfriend.
It's awkard. Face it, everyone is a little grossed out when they catch their parents having sex.
