A "Shemale" is a type of Male-to-Female Transsexual - that is, they are an individual who was born biologically male, but who feels that they are really female.

In the case of a Shemale, she has gone to the point of dressing in a female manner, assuming a female name, taking female hormones, having facial and body hair removed, either having breast implants or having developed breasts due to taking large doses of female hormones but who still has a penis and testicles.

Typically shemales appear to be female when fully dressed and even when they are topless - some shemales are actually prettier than the average biological woman!

However when shemales remove their pants or skirts and their panties, it becomes evident that they still have male sex organs (some shemales are also known to urinate while standing up in the typical male manner - particularly in situations where urinating in a female manner by sitting or squatting might be awkward or inconvenient).

Many shemales attempt to conceal their male genitals - particularly when they are in sexual situaions with males who identify as heterosexual - for example, they might take their top off but leave their panties on and keep their legs squeezed together with their penis and testicles tucked between their legs and they might only perform oral sex on the man while limiting him to touching their breasts and not allowing him to touch their lower body.

Some male heterosexuals have been known to overreact violently when they discover a sex partner is a shemale rather than a biological female or a "Post Op Transsexual" (that is, a Male-to-Female Transsexual who has had her penis and testicles amputated and has had a surgically constructed vagina added to her body).

These men overreact due to their homophobia and their belief that having sex with a Shemale makes them "gay" even though they identify as a heterosexual man and their partner identifies as a heterosexual woman (despite her male anatomical features).

It's an offensive term, usually only used to describe porn stars and sex workers who've transitioned partly from male to female via HRT (Hormone replacement therapy), but hasn't had gender reassignment surgery.

A person transitioning from one gender to the other is a transsexual; either Male to Female (MtF) of Female to Male (FtM). Using that term to describe an MtF would be considered a crude pejorative.
