A giant squid is used to describe several species of squid (which is an oceanic mollusk in the cephalopod family) but mainly belongs to a genus dubbed Architeuthis. They are said to get about 60 feet though 30 footers are more common. They were once believed to be a myth until some were seen dried up on land. They are large, and carnivorous and can be found in the deepest seas of all the world's oceans, usually in the far northern and southern reaches. Their main predator is the male sperm whale.

Another squid that is commonly called a giant squid is Doscidicus gigas (the humbolt squid). Hope this answers your question.
