Gnomes get a boost to Intelligence so that may be a good choice. Humans also get a boost to Spirit for what that's worth.

Gnome makes a good mage if you're playing Alliance, they get and int increase off the bat. you could play Blood Elf if you have the expansion, or troll would be good if you play Horde (as would the Blood Elf). Humans make good mages too, and gain rep quickly because of their racial bonus.

in game hit Esc / Keybindings then scroll down to movement section near the bottom of the movement keys list there should be one labeled Toggle run/walk then to the left of that it will show what button on you computer is set to change it. Exit out of that screen and go back to playing. Hit the button that was indicated and he should start running again.
