"Marijuana" is considered a drug, something that intoxicates you. "Hemp products" are used for industrial purposes, such as construction materials ( hemp plastics), fabrics ( hemp clothes ) health food source ( hemp seed oil and protein powders) and so forth. Though the two belong to the same species of plant, Cannabis sativa L, they do not both contain equal or even comparable amounts THC, which is what the "high" chemical is in marijuana. You use the fiber from the stalk & hurds and the oil from the seeds of the Hemp plant, and the flowering buds from the "marijuana" plant. Two different plants, two very different purposes, and way too many names that confuses us all. What Makes Marijuana a Drug? No matter how you feel about marijuana, whether you would classify it as a medicine, a drug, a recreational tool, or a narcotic doesn’t really matter. What makes it this way is its THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) content. It takes at least 3% THC in order to get high and higher quality marijuana (used for drug consumption) will have 10-15% THC. How Much THC Does Hemp Have? Due to the way hemp is grown and its separation from marijuana, hemp has a much lower THC content. Industrial hemp contains only about 0.01% – 1.5% THC ( Tetrahydrocannabinoids, the intoxicating ingredients that make you high) while marijuana contains about 5% – 10% or more THC. The low amount of THC is what makes hemp worthless for getting high. It has been estimated by some researchers of hemp that it would take an acre of hemp to get high. In one acre of hemp there is about 10-20 tons of plant material grown. Impossible to consume.

Hemp products include those mentioned--rope, fabric, cosmetics--and foods. The hemp seed is very nutritious, containing the healthy omega-3 fatty acids. From hemp seed the oil can be extracted--hemp oil--and a sort of nut butter is made, goodies of various kinds, energy bars, and as an ingredient in vegetarian "burgers"

Hemp is a form of marijuana. It is the fibres derived from the plant itself, and is used in many things including the making of long-wear clothing. One thing, the plant that they get hemp from is not the exact same type of plant that is smoked.
