Maybe a better question would be, "DOES the greek contribution ..help us today?" Some might argue that the evolution of these concepts has contributed greatly to the miasmic alienation plaguing modern society. While catharsis may very well be a healthy effect of temporarily immersing our consciousness in vicarious depictions, too much of a good thing can be harmful. Now our heroes are no longer the movers and shakers that attempt to make positive change in the world, but the thespians who portray them, the comedians who ridicule them and the pundits who idolize or demonize them. And as artistic expression becomes evaluated more and more on net financial gain, artists are pressured more and more to pander to an increasingly myopic and self centered demographic, resulting in a vicious cycle of boredom, cheap thrills and overpriced popcorn. Q: Where goest thou, America? Where goest thou in thy shiny black car in the night? A: To the movies! This is a really involved question for this forum, by the way. I probably shouldn't have tried to answer it. My bad.
