It certainly can.
Femals with anorexia nervosa oftentimes have no periods.

Warning signs of anorexia:
Deliberate self-starvation with weight loss
Fear of gaining weight
Refusal to eat
Denial of hunger
Constant exercising
Greater amounts of hair on the body or the face
Sensitivity to cold temperatures
Absent or irregular periods
Loss of scalp hair
A self-perception of being fat when the person is really too thin

Yes, it can. Fat cells store hormones and the less fat you have the less hormonal impact on your body. It is a recognized fact that girls who are overweight often start their periods earlier than their normal or underweight peers. This doesn't mean you would want to try to add weight just to start your period. Just eat a healthy, balanced diet and let your body do things on it's own time.

ALM is right ... but you can be skinny and not suffering from malnutrition. Just eat healthy and take a vitamin with iron daily. Some people are naturally skinny, be thankful.
