I have to present a mini lesson to my education class but I want it to be fun and sometimes my idea of fun is not the same as someone else's.

Memory by association. We were given a 'base' set of 15 words to commit to memory , (or we could keep a list in front of us. ) Then the teacher gave us 15 more words, one by one that we were to remember by associating them with their number on the first list: For example: Our base #1 was umbrella...and #1 on second list was maybe fish. We associated the two,,we caught fish in our umbrella.........(these are just examples) and so on. I got so I could tell you what word was what number, or what number the word was. I could also tell you the second list backwards.. It was really fun.

Gah I have to do those too!

Here are some great lessons I have had/done/seen:

1. For studying ancient civilizations, put the students into groups and give them sugar cubes, thread and toothpicks. Have them, using their previous knowledge, create a pyramid using one of the theories they have been taught or creating and justifying a theory. Afterwards use the sugar cubes to have the find perimiter, area, etc of each layer of the pyramid. You can also have them write a short story about being a slave and working on the pyramids. Lots of different strands!

2. Have students go outside on a day when there is fresh snow in an untouched area. Have the students, before hand, plot out different shapes on dot paper or graph paper. When they go outside, using their footprints, have them plot out a few shapes. Have them count the area and perimiter of the shapes and create a few new fun ones. This one is great in Ontario because the province has made it manditory that teachers have their students exercise for 20 minutes a day (besides gym class) and this one can count.

Good luck with your lesson!

Do you do science? I loved an 8th grade science lesson on Caloric theory. This is the old idea that heat was a fluid lighter than air. We had to propose experiments to prove or disprove. Then he had us heat pennies and see if the mass was changed. I have done something similar with 8th and 10th graders.
I contrast it to kinetic theory but allow a variety of materials including hammers and pennies, vacuum thermoses, and sandpaper. Discuss hypothesis, theory, predictions, etc. The key is to not let them know until the end (or the next day) that the kinetic theory is now accepted andhte caloric theory has disproven.

My favorite lesson was learning that George Washington,My favorite gentleman in any period .Was the greatest horseman of his time,he was acclaimed for this.He loved his home and farming above being a great General. It is a little know fact that he created the mule, for a work animal by crossing a burro with a horse.this is the man the British refused to allow their snipers to shoot ,they so admired his always leading his troops into battle. He was happier creating the mule, than being President God Bless him,how lucky we were to claim him our own!
