I usually wake up 1-3 times in the middle of the night. I've always been this way, and recently I realized that it may not be normal... is it?

I'm pretty much ALWAYS tired, but it's been that way for so long that i just manage. Could this be why?

You could have sleep apnea, especially if you're always feeling tired. Your doctor can refer you to a sleep clinic for diagnosis. Sleep apnea is very serious, can affect your heart and the rest of your body.
Keep a little sleep journal for a week or so, marking down the times you get up and how you feel...throat dry, do you wake yourself with snoring, chest pressure, anything else you notice.

I have heard and read several times that it is very normal to wake up a couple of times each night. As long as you are able to fall back to sleep quickly, it's fine. If you feel tired most of the time, you may want to talk to your doctor. Depending on if you sleep alone, is there someone who can tell you if you snore? Sometimes a snoring problem can be a symptom of sleep apnea, which would definitely make you tired. Otherwise, he/she may prescribe something for you for a couple of weeks to help you get into a good sleep rhythm. If you are a very light sleeper, you may not be going through the proper phases of sleep, thus you are not rested when you wake the next morning. Good luck.

No, I do not believe this is normal. I worked as a medical assistant for over 6 years and this is normally a sign of insomnia
and I personally have the same problem, I wake at least 2-3 times a night and have a hard time getting back to sleep, I can constantly exhausted unless I take my RX'd meds. "Ativan" , it is a tranquilizer and really helps. I would make a "sleep log" and date the times, etc. that you awake and then take that into your doctor, it will really help him and you with this problem. Good luck, I so know the feeling honey.

I wake up 1 - 3 times a night but it doesn't make me tired during the day. I am able to fall right back to sleep--are you able to? How old are you? If you're in your 40's or 50's, it is common to wake up a lot and not get a solid night's sleep (according to my Ob/gyn doc). You could ask your doctor to prescribe Ambien or another sleep drug, or try taking Benadryl before bed (it's an anti-histimine that makes most people sleepy). But you really should go to your doctor and tell him/her that you're always tired and maybe they'll check your thyroid levels. If your thyroid is normal, then they might recommend you spending the night in sleep center.

No it is not normal for you or me. I get up multiple times in the night to go to the bathroom. I have a horshoe shaped kidney which means the kidneys are joined at the bottom. Liquids settle there until I lay down and the liquids that settled in the bottom of the kidneys will fill the bladder then I have to get up and hit the bath room. I would talk to your doctor about your sleeping patterns. It could be something so simple as something in your diet won't let you get the deep sleep you need.

I do that too. You're probably just a light sleeper like me, and if so, there's nothing you can really do about it. But make sure you don't drink too much befoere going to bed (I have to get up a lot, which wakes me up even more) you don't have too much covers and you don't have too little, too much light can wake you up even if you are still tired, and fix anything else that could possibly wake you up. That happens to me too! I don't think it's normal though, perhaps you have too much energy when you sleep? Maybe you could try exercising before bed, so you're really drained when you turn in.

That used to happen to me. Try purchasing a different bed...maybe the one you sleep on is very uncomfortable.

it's not abnormal. especially if you have no problem going back to sleep. there are a lot of other factors involved. your age, health, medications, etc.
