these people are idiots.... they wont reproduce in captivity-unless of course you have figured it out when there are lots of people out there trying to find an easy way to get them too...
they need a large body of salt water in order to reproduce such as an ocean and unless you have that in your aquarium its not going to happen. good chance they were not mating

Hermit crabs will not mate in captivity since after mating the female needs to throw the eggs sac into the sea. I guess technically this means that they can mate but nothing will come out of it unless anyone can figre out how to put an ocean in an enclosure. I don't know how the official mating takes place but I would assume that they would both have to leave their shells which leaves them very vulnerable and since they are alway under a certain amount of stress in captivitiy I don't think they are willing to become so exposed and vulnerable. When they change shells it is a quick thing and it is really bad for the hermie to be out of it's shell for really long.

Well, first they come out of their shells, introductions are made, they decide if they are going out to dinner & a movie, or right to the beach to make out. One thing leads to another, there is "chemistry", the night air is warm, a little pinch here and there and it's hermit crab LOVE...they aren't going to be hermits anymore since they found each other! Don't you just love a happy ending? Ta Dah!

Hermit crabs can be rather shy, but mating helps them come out of their shells.
