gravity bends spacetime. think of spacetime like a bed sheet spread out in midair. now put a bowling ball in the middle. what happens? the weight (mass) of the ball creates a dent (bend) in the sheet (space-time). You can think of a black hole like this as well. mathematically, a black hole is just a dent so deep in the sheet, that everything around falls in, and the sides are so sharp once something starts in it cant get out.
