If you go to bed with a problem or just a busy mind, the brain's activity will keep you awake. If you are under stress, that too will keep you awake. If you drink beverage with caffeine six hours before bedtime, that will also keep you awake. To help relax from stress, take a warm shower and drink an herbal tea like Sleepytime to help you to relax. There are also other teas with camomile. As for the first part I cannot answer that.

My mom is a doctor, and I have a bit of insomnia. She always tells me a couple things: reading before bed or a hot shower helps. one of the most important things is exercise. If I personally don't exercise, I'll be up all night. I have to have at least 30 + minutes so I often go for a run. It's fast and easy, cuz you can do it right around your neighbourhood. Also, try taking melatonin, it's a natural drug that helps you sleep, but you won't get addicted. I take 2-3 a night and it helps me get drowsy. Also, get into a regular sleep pattern, maybe go to bed at 10, get up at 7 AM. Even if it means that you fall asleep at 2 AM, still wake up at 7 AM, otherwise your body will get confused. Hope I helped.

Don't drink things containing caffeine after six at night.
Develop a regular pattern for sleeping. The body loves habits.
Exercise. You may have to experiment as to when to do this. Some people can't exercise for several hours before bedtime.
OTC medications might help.
Visit a doctor.

Try listening to music. I find that I always keep myself awake because I think too much, but by listening to music I focus on the music and not my thoughts and eventually I drift off. Good luck.

It's too late now to do anything, but tomorrow go buy some Benadryl (anti-histimine that makes you sleepy) and give that a try. If that doesn't work then go to your doctor to get a prescription for Ambien. I have a friend who takes Ambien to sleep and swears it's the greatest drug.

I don't know your age, but a doctor can prescribe medication that can help you sleep. I don't suppose that if you're under18 years of age that that would be an option. But if you are an adult, ask for a prescription for Remeron. It will definitely help you sleep without any side effects.

There a many different tricks I use when I have trouble falling asleep. First, get into your "comfortable" position... we all have one. Next, close your eyes and imagine that you're on a cloud. Then, inhale... when you exhale, feel yourself sink further into the cocoon of the cloud. Each time you exhale, feel yourself sinking further. I was skeptical when I first heard it, but It really works.
