Simple. Self Preservation. No matter what age you are, this nevr changes. In basic Psychology, humans have two main goals in life. To be loved AND accepted. Think about why you tell a lie. You are trying to protect something. It could be a mistake you made, your ego, yours (or someone elses') feelings?
Society is harsh and we do NOT (in general) accept people when we think they have "screwed up"..... Sometimes a small or big lie feels worth that horrible shadow of REJECTION.......

To cover for actions that were discourteous to other people.
Unable to face the honest truth and whatever consequences the truth holds.
To manipulate situations for personal gain.
By the way, I turned out pretty darn honest and sometimes telling the truth can get you into trouble. When you feel it best to not reveal the truth it is better to remain silent than to tell a lie though.
My conscience is a clear one and I am grateful for that.

Personal gain, adoration, false ability, false education, money, advancement, but it all boils down to 2 things. Money and the adoration of others. Some people don't need an excuse. Lying just becomes a way of life.

I dont think it has anything to do with how you feel about yourself people lie to prevent the consequences of their actions. Your mom finds the vase you broke you lie and say it wasnt you it was your brother because if she found out was you she would kick an extra hole in your assets and why would you bring pain upon yourself if you don't have to.

The pioneering work of Freud into the human defense mechanism explored in even more detail by his daughter Anna Freud lists lying as a defense mechanism that protects the psyche/ego from experiencing potential hurt, pain or fear.

People lie because it's easier to do than to tell the truth. They lie to protect themselves and others from hurt, judgment, ridicule, embarrassment, etc.

People tell white lies to protect the person they are with, to save themselves or the other person embarassment, to get out of something for various reasons (laziness, something bores them), because they are "private" people and feel the other person doesn't need to know everything or anything about them, to intentionally mislead a person (playing with the other person's mind), to disguise something they did, etc.

ok... first of all, let me tell you this is just my opinion, it's not documented anywhere, but i hope it will help you.....
people lie to fit in.. to be like someone else, to be accepted...
I HAVE A PERFECT EXAMPLE!!
my best friend is bi-sexual. i have another friend who is bi-sexual as well. they are both in their mid 40's, have good jobs and live with their significant others.. (they are both male)
we have this 17 year old boy who likes to hang around with us ALL the ti me...
he's straight... then when James comes around, he's all of a sudden gay...
James has grown children whom he talks about all the time..
now all of a sudden Chris (the 17 yr. old) has a baby who is 3.
like i said in the beginning.. people lie coz they wanna fit in or they want to impress the people they are around..
ive always been a firm believer in being yourself, not being someone youre not
hope this helps!!
