I have my first job interview coming up very soon and I have been told that this is a very common question to be asked, although I'm not really sure what to answer.

If you could please give me some possible answers to this question?..

I really need this job!

personally I would do nothing, it's none of my business what other people do. However, I am sure that's not the answer an employer would be looking for. Employers love tattle tails!

In a job interview, I would say that I would advise my boss or manager that someone is shoplifting, but I would not confront the person myself. In reality, I would do nothing. A shoplifter will keep it up until he's caught and gets to spend some time in jail. I know because I spent a night in jail for shoplifting when I was a teenager and after that, I NEVER EVER did it again.

Notify a manager.

Never EVER accuse the customer of having the item, because they could have "ditched" it without you seeing, and if the police are called you could have a lawsuit on your hands.

Most stores will tell you not to pursue the shoplifter outside, because you never know who is waiting out there, and it's not worth the risk.

Best thing to do if no manager is around, say, "Are you ready to check out?" while standing between them and the door. Then they know you saw them.

If they are just starting to walk out, make it clear you've noticed while not being too confrontational. Say (politely but loudly): "Excuse me, do you need me to ring that up for you?" This gives the person a couple of ways out. They can say yes, like they were looking for help all along. Or they can act like they were still holding the item by mistake, like they forgot they picked it up. They can give it back like they never intended to steal it. You don't want to alienate customers; you have to be courteous even to suspected shoplifters.

you get a description of the person, the vehicle and license plate if you can. confront the person, but if he tries to leave, do not stop him and put yourself in danger. if you have a security Gard, get him as soon as you can and have him confront the person. if not, and your on your own, call the police, if a manger is on site, tell him before you call, if there is none on site, call the police and then call the manager. of course, you also will follow any theft prevention policy's that the store has in place

Report it to the manager and let him/her take care of it. Or if the store has security you should report it to them. This is the answer they are usually after because in most states the store can be held liable if you or the perpetrator gets hurt.

Rat them out. This is the answer that they are looking for, and it is not unreasonableto to not condone theft.

Stop them and politely ask them if they noticed that they were carrying an un-bought item, and if you think they're lying, ask to see a receipt.
