Yes, they can mate, but it's hard to raise the babies - the eggs hatch in the ocean and they spend the first part of their live in salt water:

Hermit crabs received't mate in captivity on the grounds that after mating the female needs to throw the eggs sac into the sea. i wager technically this signifies that they could mate yet no longer some thing will come out of it except all of us can figre out a thanks to placed an ocean in an enclosure. i do not recognize how the authentic mating takes position yet i might want to assume that they could both ought to go away their shells which leaves them very weak and on the grounds that they are alway less than a particular quantity of rigidity in captivitiy i do not imagine they are prepared to develop into so uncovered and weak. at the same time as they change shells that is a short component and that's undesirable for the hermie to be out of that's shell for really lengthy.

It hasn't been done yet (if you mean to breed and produce) as far as I know but i'm sure if you live in a good climate (where you can use the wire cages and they don't die) then it might be possible. I have never heard it happen though. As far as I know they are captured and sold as pets.
