There is at least 1 every year that I have that is just SO intimidating that whenever anyone asks them a question in class, they stare at them and give them like this disgusted/confused look.....it's no wonder nobody likes to participate in those classes!

I have always wondered that.. I had a prof. in college that said the 1st day of class "i don't have office hours so and I can't stay after class so if u need to ask me something..do it in class"..Then when someone asked him a question, he replied with "are you stupid or what"? Needless to say he's now head of the dept. The honest truth is some prof. are there JUST to make money, don't care if u learn or not and don't want to be bothered by students WHO pay their salary.. Go figure.. That's why a LOT of students don't ask questions in class.

Unlike primary and secondary school where people become teachers because they actually like teaching and working with students, professors do not necessarily become professors because they like to teach. A good portion of professors prefer to do their own research but the only foum for that research is at a university and therefore they have to teach a class or two. These professors come across as intimidating because they really don't want to deal with students--they'd rather be researching and writing a paper about post-modern influences of the Cold War on Soviet folk art from 1961-1962, or whatever their highly specialized area of research is in.

As far as I'm concerned, these professors have something to prove. "Please, I have such wonderful information to give out, why are you bothering me with such inane questions?"

Nobody should feel intimidated when in class. Questions to professors are meant to clarify an idea that the professor has lectured about that somehow does not make sense to you. If a professor is out to make you feel small, he is NOT the person to ask your question to.

Read about the issue in your text, make contacts in the class so you and these other students can go over stuff together, and don't bother trying to get a personal relationship with this professor.

Good luck!

yep I think some one else said it. If they cant hold up under questioning they will bully the class and blame the students for not understanding when its the professor's lack of communication skills. I would petition the school board and explain it to them in those terms and request an alternitive. its YOUR money and YOUR education and you are paying them to do a job. If they dont do thier job by talking but not teaching why should they get payed?

It's for a few reasons:
1) To show who is smarter and in charge (allegedly).
2) To look down at the "pee-on's".
3) To increase their self-esteem by pooping on others.
4) To "test" the student's guts.
5) To prepare students for bosses who WILL do the same thing!

That is a professor that thinks he is smarter than everyone and everyone else is a bunch of morons. That kind of person doesn't realize you are paying them to share knowlege. Sadly, there are more than a few professors like this.

These professors are soooo smart they think everyone understands those things they think are basic. They don't understand that we students are not as smart as them otherwise we won't ask them those questions.

Exactly that. They scare everyone into silence and then they don't have to work too hard or think.
