This could possibly be a referred reaction of a pinched nerve. We all know what it feels like when a foot falls asleep from lack of circulation (when the blood flow is reduced, the circulation is compromised) but this usually doesn't happen within 5 seconds. In laymans terms, you may have a nerve that "catches" when you put yourself in certain positions. The fact that it is BOTH arms may just refer to the location of the nerve, but obviously it's something that should be evaluated more thoroughly and I can only speculate. I do know one thing for certain, circulation problems should not be taken lightly! When tissues don't receive adequate blood supply, they will die and it doesn't take long for this to happen so better get it checked out! This could also be indicitive of more serious complications.

There are a number of reasons which I'll list below:
- Low blood pressure- I have it and sometimes when I'm just watching tv, I become restless and realize that my foot or leg fell asleep.
- You're indirectly leaning on your blood supply vein in your elbow. That happened to me once.
- Your neck muscles are VERY tight. Get someone to squeeze your shoulders to see what happens. If you feel it in your shoulder blade, you're likely over stressed or sitting wrong.
- You have a pinched nerve, go see a doctor
- You have nerve trauma from an accident that is showing now.
These are all causes and could be a million more. The best thing, if you're concerned and it's happening way too much, go see your doctor. These answers can't fully help you ease your woes. Only a doctor can.

If it was just general circulation...you would typically see it happen with repeated upper extremity strenuous tasks...this would be intermittent claudication. This does not sound like your symptoms...
The first two things that come to mind are thorasic outlet syndrome or a significant cervical disc problem. Although, if it was the latter, you'd be in a significant amount of pain on a regular basis. If you ARE having pain and numbness in both arms, it could be a sign of cord compression (especially if the symptoms are constant...but it doesn't sound like it is).
Thorasic outlet syndrome is a condition where the blood and/or nerve supply to the arms is cut off during certain positions. It may be due to poor posture or an extra "rib" on your neck...known as a cervical rib. The fact that it is occuring intermittently and with certain positions tells me this is a possibility. There are specific physical tests that your doctor or a physical therapist can perform to screen you for this disorder. If they are positive, you should consider having a cervical x-ray to determine if there is a cervical rib present.

Poor circulation usually is the cause. Check with your Doctor then start yourself on an exercise program. How old are you? Do you get out of breath quickly? Do you smoke? Do you eat healthy or junk? This can happen when trying to sleep. When your body doesn't have proper support your arms fall asleep. Try a new pillow and if that doesn't work get a plush or pillow top mattress with plenty of support. It'll cost $1,500 to $3,000 for a good one.

Possible nerve damage. I would recommend that you go see a neurologist who can do a test called an EMG (electromyography (EMG) measures muscle response/electrical activity in response to a nerve’s stimulation of the muscle. The test is used to help detect neuromuscular abnormalities.) The neurologist will test the nerves in your arms or anywhere else in the body they suspect may be causing the problem) for function and any damage. Neurologists are the one who specialize in this sort of thing. (I just had an EMG done recently by a neurologist for similar problems.)

Well the "falling asleep" numb feeling you are getting is from when the angle of your arm puts presure on one of the major nerves going over your shoulder joint. The same thing can hapen to your foot if you cross your legs a cirtan angle because a simmilar nerve runs accross your butt on your hip joint. If you're overweight that may contribute to things because of the ammount of presure.

Do you have any circulatory problems? That could be the root cause. But the easiest way to prevent it from happening is to recognize what causes it, physically, and then not do that thing. I suppose you could think of it this way: be grateful it's your arms and not your bum and it beginning to snore too!

There is a such thing as restless leg syndrome maybe there is a such thing as restless arm syndrome look into both or even ust restless leg and see if your arms match any of the symptoms. To get your arms to wake up more quickly put the above your head it might hurt but it increases blood flow.

Look, I'm not a doctor, but from what I know these are signs of poor circulation, sometimes due to a heart condition. You shouldn't be on here asking laypeople, you need to see a doctor immediately! Please take my advice- Your health is nothing to play with, go see your MD ASAP! Good luck, I hope it's nothing serious...
