light switches say on/off? When it's on you can see it's on, when it's off you can't see to read?

Now, there is a very interesting history to the story. You see, a great and powerful god once granted an ordinary man extraordinary powers to be able to see in the dark, as if it were light!! Well, this man could never tell if the lights were on or off, and he had to look up to see if it was day or night. Eventually, this man became so popular, that he was appointed vice president of his club. However, the only thing the vice president did was turn the lights on and off for his boss. This became a challenge, though, because he couldn't see if the light was already on or not. He then had to confess this issue to his boss. Luckily, the president of the club was nice, and he put labels on all the light switches in the club. Then, since he realised that the god may give the power to other people, he took the matter to the president of the United States. The president examined this matter and decided to pass a law stating that all light switches must be labled "on" and "off." And that, my friend, is why light switches say on/off.
Or it could just be so that, before the light switch is applied to the wall, you can make sure it's not upside-down.
I like the first theory better.

If you're in my house, it's for the dyslexics. Most of the switches here were put in upside down, so off is on and on is off...the bathroom faucets are the same - hot is cold and cold is hot...I have no idea what idiot approved the building codes, but it makes for entertainment at parties.

on means up u switch the light up and its on.the light is on,so u can only see the word off.and the same way goes 4 the off button.

it's simple You read ON when it is light, When it is dark, flip the switch to the other position, then it will be light and you can see it says "ON"
