Ideally I would hope that no woman would choose this. There are VERY serious risks including the fact that babies that are born via c-section have as much as three times the risk of dying after delivery but during the first 1 month of life for reasons medical science doesn't understand:

However, ultimately I must accede that women should have the right to choose this option, however doctors should have the right to refuse to do it. I am sure there would be doctors willing to do it, as I am sure there would be some unwilling to let a mother and infant undergo the risks for no reason.

I don't think so...C-sections should only be done if your life or the baby's life is in danger. C-sections are major surgery and there are several complications that can arise from having one. You could have problems with subsequent pregnancies, and it does take a very long time to fully recover from it. Also, on the cosmetic end of things, be prepared to possibly always have "the pooch". They cut your muscle to get to the baby, and you really don't get that back! I have had a C-section, and I truly wish I could have avoided it. For me, natural birth was the way to go...I felt so great after having my children (both over 9 pounds), as for the C-section, it took a very long time to heal and the incision tore several times.

Absolutely. It's a world of options, why are there no options in delivery? I think that doc's are all at the will of the insurance companies or in cahoots with them. Because a c-section is more expensive then natural of course they will recommend natural. Plus it decreases the amount of OR time used up by deliveries, since there can be several deliveries in a hospital in a day. It could potentially tie up too many OR's.

C sections make alot more money for the hospital but put you at greater risk for infecton and recovery time. Please don't consider this unless it is an emergency, a good doctor will spend the extra time it takes for a normal delivery rather than recommend the procedure of convenience.

no because c-section is major surgery.why opt for it when you dont know the consequences.i had both and would never ever have a c again if i had a choice.besides if you have first through c then all others usually are the same.this limits the number of kids you can have.most people have huge trouble by 3rd

I would like to choose to have one. Not to scare anyone but I think of my friends sister alot who suffered an anurism while giving birth. She died and it was because she pushed so hard it caused the anurism. (not sure hoe to spell it). I know the chances of that are slim but, it doesnt make me stop thinking about it.
I would like to opt for a c-section myself. I read in a book that they are now allowing mom-to-be's have more of a voice for their preference. I havent discussed this with my OB just yet, but plan to.
Good luck to you...

It depends.
If it is truly elective, meaning not medically necessary, I believe the mother has the right but it would be completely at her expense. If someone is dependant on public aid, or covered by insurance, and they don't have the finances to pay for it, they should not be given the option.

Yes - but another way to phrase this is, do we have any business dictating how other women give birth? No, we don't. What is right for one is not right for all.
I wish people would stop thinking it's a good idea to legislate their opinions to all others. Hey, that oughta be a law...

NO elective c-sections should not be allowed, they should only be allowed if medically necessary.
