hi. i live in a townhouse. when i came home at 5PM today, i realized that there was a beeping sound coming from somewhere. first, i did not really hear it, and i thought that it was just someone down the block's house beeping. however, i went outside and realized that it was coming from someone's apartment, about 1 townhouse away. i have never seen this person in the house, and there is no one in the house. i tried calling the managment, but they didn't pick up. any suggestions? what should i do?

Granted the management did not answererr..I've had landlords not answere when I need to talk to them ...If it is an emergency in any situation and it causes you alarm...don't be afraid to call 911 that's what they are there for... better to come out to find a smoke alarm with a low battery than to have the whole townhouse burn to the ground with all your belongings...my daugther lives in a townhouse in Denver and I would have told her the same.... Also Living in a Apartment or townhouse.. check into renters insurance that way your furnishings are covered in the event of a fire burglary or whatever may happen.... I am a landlord and if my renter does not have renters insurance to cover their belongings ....I am not responsible for their belongings...good things for you to know...I'm happy there was nothing wrong!!!!

Now that you know that fire extinguishers cause a beeping sound when the battery is low is good information for you. But I would be concerned with your management not answering your calls. What is this had been an emergency or a water leak or something of that matter. Do you just let the water continue to flow until the Manager gets in touch with you? A lot of damage could be done to your furniture and belongings, your apartment or the apartments below you. I think someone in management should be on call 24/7. Also if management knew about the problem in the other apartment why had they not already replaced the battery in that fire alarm. What would happen if there was an electrical fire in the empty apartment? Low or no battery to notify others there is a fire.. Just thoughts I would ponder on if I were you.

I'm glad you found out it was just the smoke alarm, but next time if the management doesn't respond, I would call the police or fire department. I think the management would have been racing over when they saw the flashing lights! Besides, it could have been a carbon monoxide detector. How are you to know? Something like that could affect you as well. Better to be safe than to wait around for your management!

If it has been going on for quite some time and there is no other indication that there may be a problem, like smoke or flashing lights, call the police department (not 911) and tell them what is happening and they will check it out. It is probably an alarm someone forgot to shut it off before they left.

If you think it is a fire alarm, you could call the fire department and let them know. It might not be, but what if it is?
If it's just annoying and no possible danger, you should harass the managment of the apartments/townhomes and keep at it until someone comes and fixes it.
If it keeps on going and drives you crazy, and they don't fix it tonight, I'm sorry I feel for you, and start first thing in the morning raising hell with your property manager! Don't beat on them or anything, but make sure they are aware so they can fix it and you can get a good night's sleep!

Well, it could be someone's alarm clock that they accidentally set for PM instead of AM. If you don't think that is it, I would call the police. It can never hurt to have them come check things out. At the very least, you will have reported it. Obviously your conscience is telling you to do something, so maybe this will give you a little relief to tell the police (or even call other neighbors).

When the battery in a smoke alarm gets too low, it will beep constantly in some models, intermittently in others.. A carbon monoxide detector can also beep.

Remember characteristics about the guy and his licence plate if he has a car. If you're sure he's up to no good, call the police, but if he could be someone who knows the residents, don't- it may just lead to an embarassing episode. Better safe than sorry, though.

It's probably the "low battery" warning on a smoke detector. If it's really bothering you and you are worried about it, try the management again and you could always report it to the police.

If you have tryed to get a hold of whoever lives there and no one answered call the police. explain to them just like you did here. let them decide if its worth investigating
