Why are Americans so obsessed with FICTION?

Americans are obsessed with fiction because we feel that the real world isn't as wonderful as we thought is was going to be when we were little kids. We create more interesting worlds and stories to try and escape from the heartaches of this life. That's why we watch so much TV and movies and read so many books and play so many video games. We just can't coop with reality. Don't think that other Americans are going to admit this because a good 99.9% of us don't even realize that they're doing it. They can't see past the glare of TV screen.

We love fiction because we are eternally optimistic. We believe that a fantasy world can become reality. I think, with the saturation of the internet, so many games, etc. that our complete concept of reality is slowly eroding away. Even "reality shows," which people will watch to no end, are staged. You watch to escape (happy endings, chick flicks), or you watch to feel better about where you are (war movies, murder movies). As for reading, something like 5% of the American population buys one book every year. . . sad.

Reading fiction can take you to another place or time through your imagination. It's almost like a vacation without having to leave the comfort of your home.

Every culture has myths and stories, not just Americans.

I've never heard that statistic about only 5% of Americans buying a book a year, thats pretty sad. I personally am an avid reader and go through a book every other week or so. :)

I didn't know fairies had tails. In all the tales I've read, I've never seen tails mentioned.
