It all depends. What are the dimensions of the land? Is it 1 x 40 or is it 8 x 5?

An acre is an area of 43,560 square feet. Therefore you cannot use it as a measurement of length and it does not make sense to say that it is 40 acres Nortn to South and 40 acres East to West. An acre could be 43,560 feet East to West and 1 foot Nort to South

I think you meant to say is that you have a plot of land that is a square and contains 40 acres. If you are then the square lot is 1,320 feet per side which is 440 yards per side.

Thus to you would walk 440 yards.
