I would check to ensure that when you changed the air filter that you did not accidentally disconnect any hoses or wiring connectors.

A couple thoughts come to mind for such a sudden drop, assuming the weather is still warm where you are. (Cold weather can bring on drops like that when the car makes a lot of short trips.) The first is dragging brakes, and the easiest way of checking that is to feel each wheel - the rim, not the rubber - after a bit of highway driving. A hot wheel has to be checked out. If it's easier for you to jack up each wheel and check for drag, that's good too. The other thought is a bad thermostat, one that is not closing enough and letting coolant leak through. It is amazing how much fuel economy is lost when that happens. Besides a lower temperature gauge reading - don't know if your Metro has a gauge or light - it can also be checked by feeling the upper radiator hose during warm-up. If the hose suddenly goes from room temperature to hot the thermostat is doing its job; if it gets warm early and just gradually rises the thermostat is stuck open.

beleive it or not I have found diferent gas from different stations give me different MPG readings so make sure you burn the the same gas each time and same octane too try to see if it averages out to be the same each time , if they do come out to still being too low for you I would recomend you to have the car checked out may be you do need some sort of tune up, how many miles does it have between oil chages makes a difference too.

Check the air pressure in your tires. The more at level the air the better the mileage.

Check all vacuum hoses for proper connection,as this could cause poor gas mileage.Do you have a locking gas cap? Some one could be stealing gas from you.
