I decided to go with HP last time and I love it (especially since I could buy it from a store and not through the mail). I got a great deal on a 19" flatscreen by Samsung at the same time, too....also easier because I was browsing in a store and not online. Don't get me wrong...I usually LOVE buying stuff online, but in this case, the fact that I could see what I was buying helped me out a great deal.

Each of the brands you mentioned are durable, but my personal favorite is probably dell. It is probably best to choose by price and size necessary, and to get a flat screen only if it is within budget and you don't have much space. CRT's are probably more reliable, but flat screens usually have more vivid displays.

We have an Averatec laptop and it's wonderful. Yeah, you've probably never heard of it either. At least I can tell you NOT to buy a Compaq Presario, my dad had one and so did a friend and they had a lot of problems with it.

For high-end monitors, check out U-Vision, a korean brand. They do full 2540 x 1600 30in. monitors for less than $1000.
