I'm 43 years old. I dated ACTIVELY for 13 years before I got married. I sure HOPE I broke up with someone. There is one that still haunts me, however. I had been dating this guy for several months and the relationship was getting quite serious. I spent a long weekend at his apartment and went out to meet his parents. It really freaked me out. I ran, but instead of letting him know and bowing out gracefully, I just didn't return any of his calls and wouldn't answer the door when he came over. I never gave him an explanation and I know it broke his heart. I still think of that 20 years later. Hopefully, I think of it a lot more than he does.
Advice in a nutshell -- don't do that, have the decency to tell them face to face.
