Can someone give me a brief history of what Bono did "wrong" that people started resenting him. Wasn't it something to do with a charity or Ireland/Africa?? I would like the facts; opinions okay too.

I mean years ago, many years ago. Didn't something happen with money he gave to a charity or something, some political thing. He was backing some group or something -- some people felt they were bad/no worthy -- years ago . . .

hi Jennifer, Bono has been incredibly successful.
Some people (let's call them begrudgers) would find this reason enough to resent him.
He does have a big ego for sure & some would think he is a "do as I say not as I do" character. It all depends on how sincere one thinks he is.
He expects Governments to help or pay off third world debts with taxpayers money but he himself avoids paying taxes - this could be called hypocrisy. Live Aid & Live 8 made millions for Geldof, Bono & the bands in royalties but it was the public who dug deep in an attempt to help Africa.
There was a rumour that many of the best U2 songs were written by a ghost writer - Pat Harrison (originally from New York) who was ripped off by Bono. Some people also think he was wrong or hypocritical to accept honours from people like Tony Blair & that his vast wealth is a contradiction.
He has friends in high places that's for sure & he certainly appears to have fortune on his side.
If you like him, that's fine. If you think he has made good music, that's great. Only Bono knows the whole truth.
I just think he's a normal guy with mediocre talent who just got lucky & that's about it.
Years ago Jennifer?! Maybe the Sunday Bloody Sunday song that was critical of Britain in Northern Ireland perhaps made some people wrongly think that Bono was supporting terrorism in some way - certainly some of the Irish would see him as standing against Britain & that has made him a much loved cult figure- but now he's got an honourary knighthood from Britrain to boot - Sir Bono! He has the luck of the devil for sure but live & let live & help others where you can, that's what I say.
There's so much poverty in the world - you must individually decide if he's done a lot to help .

I don't think Bono's doing anything wrong. I think he's doing many GREAT things and trying to help change the world for the better. he's passionate about what he believes in and he's trying to get other people involved in that, as well. if people don't like that, that's their problem... i think he's GREAT! i LOVE Bono! and i LOVE U2! : )

cheers,
Shauna!

Bono chose to leave the band so that he could focus on his charity work. Mostly, people (like myself) are disappointed because they loved U2 and now it is over.

I love U2 back when they first started and they still rock. Nothing wrong, they just have haters out there.

well... first there's the music.. his band plays the same songs over and over and over and over

then there's how he's so rich and successful but campaigning to help poor people

but i think the main thing is how he sat down to talk to president bush instead of denouncing him and stuff, he will actually sit down and talk with any world leader to try and get results. i think it's very smart of him, but it's a bit "political" and some people don't like that. "diplomatic" might be another word to describe it. he's not going to be hating on bush in public like many musicians like to do.

Nothing that I've hear of other than he does have very strong opinions, is not afraid to state them and is very successful.
