The time signature is the two numbers at the beginning of each staff of music that are one above the other. For example, a song with Four-Four time has two number fours on the left side of the Grand Staff, one over the other. The top four means that there are four beats in each measure, and the bottom four means that each quarter note gets one beat. If it were Two-Four time, there would be a two on top of the four, and only two beats in a measure. And so on. There will most likely be time signatures in the treble (top) clef and the bass (bottom) clef.

How to find the first beat of a measure is simple. Measures are divided by bar lines, up and down. The timing is counted by figuring out the time signature, and counting. If the time signature is Four-Four, for example, you will count "one-two-three-four" in each measure, and the first beat will always be "one". I can't explain it any simpler.

2 numbers seen at the beginning of a piece. First number is beats a quarter note receives, second is beats per measure.
