Which ones would you like to know about? I can describe in intimate detail mostly all except heroin because I've done them. Not anymore, thankfully.
The most basic reason is they make you feel good. Euphoric is an appropriate word for the sensation. Escape is another. Eventually it can become habit forming in a way that you cannot imagine. To not have it in your system makes you seriously ill. Vomiting. A feeling like something was making your skin crawl. Itchy and sweaty and cold all at the same time. It's not fun. So the easiest solution is to feed the habit. And feeding your habit perpetuates the cycle.
Almost no-one who is or who ever has been homeless thinks for one minute that they themselves will ever be. But you lose that plush job with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, piss through all your savings, get behind on the rent far enough and wind up with nothing. Having nothing left to lose, drugs seem like a good choice to soften the blow and help you forget. At least that's the rationale. It never works out quite as well as you'd hoped, especially when the drugs and the money run out. Then you're truly phucked.
It has been six months clean for me. But it can sometimes be a struggle to keep from falling into the abyss. Do yourself a big favor and never try anything more than what the doctor prescribes. And then only take it as prescribed for as short a time as possible. It'll mess you up otherwise.

There are all sorts of drugs out there. People will do anything to get them if they are addicted to them. Different drugs affect people differently, and different people can get different reactions to even the same drugs.
Pot is not addicting physically--but people can become mentally addicted.
Heroin is a downer drug, as is Methadone, it's government replacement--addicting
Cocaine/crack/meth, etc. are upper drugs--addicting
LSD is a hallucinatory drug. I'm fairly sure that Ecstasy is too.
Prescription drugs such as Valium, Xanax, etc. are downer drugs and are addicting
Prescription drugs such as Vicodan, Percocet (don't know how these are spelled, and spellcheck is of no use on them), etc. are pain killers--addicting
Sleeping pills are addicting, and even some over-the-counter meds can be addicting.
Not everyone becomes homeless and unable to care for themselves--but enough do. Some people can take something for a long time before they get truly messed up--others can become addicted on the first try. Depends upon the drug and the user.
Alcohol can be addicting to some
Caffeine is addicting
Nicotine is addicting
There is no good reason to start drugs--if there were, there wouldn't be millions of people trying to detox off of them.

That depends on the drug. I can only.... sort of... describe marijuana, not having had the chance to do much else yet. And no description will really do any drug justice. Suffice it to say, that the sort of drug that turns people into junkies generally feels REALLY good, good enough to do it enough times to the point where you are addicted and couldn't stop if you wanted to.
And those people you hear about are not EVERY SINGLE drug user, just the ones without enough willpower to realize that doing it that often will lead to addiction. And it doesn't really happen with marijuana (at least, not the extent to where you're homeless, though some, not all but some, stoners do get pretty lazy), so do you want a description of that, since it won't really answer your question?
EDIT: and ignore the people who only describe the effects of the drugs in terms of negatives, because if that was true, people WOULDN'T DO THEM. Duh.
EDIT2: Oh my god! I can't believe I forgot! Check out erowid.org, specifically the experience reports. They have pages for more drugs than you can imagine.

Different drugs effect you in different ways. Some make you really excited. Some make you very relaxed. Some play tricks on your eyes, making you see things that aren't really there. Some have lingering aftereffects that make you want more; some don't. Most drugs are not addictive at all. A few are incredibly addictive. Two things you should keep in mind: 1) Only believe about half of what anybody tells you about drugs, and 2) your relationship to drugs, illegal AND legal, should be no different than your relationship to a lot of other interesting/attractive things in life - like Icarus and flight. Keep your wits about you.

Grass, Pot, Weed.. only thing I know about.
It's like being in a paranoid world which is constantly spinning out of control. Not very nice.
After smoking for a few years you become disconnected from reality. However, you can return to normal if you don't continue for too long. Up to Five years max.
Don't try it or anything else, it aint worth losing all of your friends, family and self respect. As a matter of fact the only friends you will have are ( not really friends ) but " Birds of the Feather ".

First I feel my heart racing. There's like this unseen energy running up and down my spine. Then I feel this rush of energy flow all through me like it's about to explode. My balls start to tighten up and shake as i await the impending force from down below. My man piece has expanded so far that it feels as if it will break free and then I get this massive sensation in both heads right before I blow. And then I just sit there enjoying the whole thing. My body feels kind of numb all over as the feelings subside. I get that drowsy feeling but I shake it off. I go pee and start all over again.

Okay, I haven't really done drugs, but I have been on Vicodin for pain. At first you are in a really good mood, and feel light and airy. You say stupid, funny things. But then, after a few weeks, you have a lot of nervous energy, and can't remember periods of time. I was on them over Christmas because of surgery, and my memories of that time are very hazy. They can totally screw you up. Don't do drugs!

If you have a good life, you don't need to be on drugs. Drugs take the edge off of people who have kind of bad lives or are looking to feel "different".
You get different feelings on different drugs. Pot makes you feel like you're having kind of a panic attack. Cocaine makes you feel hyper and like you're the best looking person and can do ANYTHING. Downers make you tired and lethargic. Morphine makes you feel like everything is going to be okay and your entire body feels fantastic.
Hey Chloe (below me), you kinda look like me.

Most I think are looking for an escape from reality. The way some use alcohol. I think some try and then become addicted.
Please don't try them though. My sister is a addict and it has ruined her life and her kids too.
