I echo phantasmagoriajeweller's recommendation of David Eddings Belgariad and Mallorian series. Wonder filled fantasy.
Other Fantasy recommendations
Mists of Avalon and Lady of Avalon by Marrion Zimmer Bradly
The Earth Children's Series by Jane Auel
The Doomsday Book by Connie Willis
Horror recommendations
Anything by H.P. Lovecraft, or Clive Barker
Steven King-His best The Stand, 'Salems Lot, Tommynockers, Needful Things and Gunslinger series, The two he wrote with Peter Straub are also great - The Talisman and Black House
Pter Straub wrote a couple I like very much as well Koko and Blue Roses.
Anne Rice's Vampire, and Witch series are both good but I think her Queen of the Damned is her best.
Dean Koontz is ok for a one book read, his books move fast, good pacing and simple, clear writing. I think if you read more than about 3 you'll notice he uses the same plot devices over and over.

A good horror book to read is Off Season by Jack Ketchum. My favorite fantasy book is still The Talisman by Stephen King. Don't know many more but these might be a start for you.

A fabulous fantasy series is the Whell of Time. THe first book is called Eye of the World. They are kindof like the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but much more complex.
Oh. And as a warning: none of the books are under 700 pages. If you're going to read them, you need a lot of time ^_^

Fantasy:
Try Piers Anthony and his Xanth, Incarnations of Immortality and Adept series.
Anne McCaffrey and her Dragonriders of Pern series.
Katherine Kurtz and her Deryni series.
I loved The Talisman, too!
Horror:
I like Misery, also by Stephen King, and I put it here because you get so involved in it. Almost painful to read.
There's a confusing series about a vampire slayer named Anita Blake - these are by Laurell Hamilton. I say confusing because it's part horror, part romance and seems more like a fantasy - a world where vampires and werewolves have rights. They also get a bit risque as you move along in the series.
Can't think of any others in this genre at the moment. Have fun!

My favorite series of books is the Vlad Taltos series by Steven Brust, a fantasy series with a strong infrastructure, but a bit more in-depth than casual reading.
