There are several locations in Microsoft Windows that intiate programs, including Services. Typically you can use msconfig.exe to reduce items that you feel are not needed. Just be careful what you turn off.

If you are asking this question on Yahoo answers, it's a good gauge you may want to get more experience or more information about what you can and cannot turn off. Not trying to be rude, just truthful.

I use the program "Chameleon Startup Manager" for it.
You can find it here:
http://www.neosoft-tools.com/windows-startup-manager.htm
It disables any startup programs and fully controls startup by selecting the programs to be launched, while customizing the startup settings (ie how often and when programs should be launched, etc).
