Not stopping virus attacks means you have programs that DON'T WORK !!!
Dump them.
Get the one that works I've been using for 3 years and not one virus has been able to successfully download
because Avast catches it BEFORE it downloads,
and sets off an alarm, so that I can delete the bugger.
I understand, and you want good anti-malware, and anti-virus programs.
The solution:
Download 2excellent FREE programs
A. For removing and stopping virus attacks.
B. For removing mal-ware and adware that act as trojans to retrieve information from your computer and your computer habits.
A. Get AVAST
1. Remove what you have now. It didn't do right did it? Dump it
2. Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and delete the anti-virus program you have now,
if you have one;
then use your Search feature, type in the name of your current anti-virus program
if you have one > right click and delete any instance it finds.
3. Get FREE Home version of an excellent anti-virus software = AVAST
http://avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html....
Install > run > do a thorough scan
and allow it to run on your computer all the time.
Whatever it finds > select DELETE
The annual registration and frequent updates are free too.
B. Get free Ad-AWARE spy-removal tool from Lavasoft
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
1. Download, install and run this program weekly or more.
You will be satisfied with these tools, I promise.

Just having an AV program doesn't mean you won't get viruses. The virus you have is probably a trojan horse and may very well block the AV from working. These usually come from infected email or files downloaded from the Internet. The first thing to do is to kill the virus, then update the AV software. The other thing that people think is that once they install AV software, they don't have to do anything else. Are you keeping it up to date each week? Viruses come out very frequently and you have to keep the AV up to date as well as Microsoft patches. Do you know how to update those too? Good luck. Oh, if you don't know how to do this, it may be a good idea to hire someone to fix it for you.

Some great free software is CCleaner to clean clutter from your hard drive, Ad-Aware to remove spy ware, AVG for anti-virus protection, Pop Peeper for keeping track of multiple email addresses real time. All good free programs that can be found on download.com
Also, you can go into msconfig (start >> Run >> type msconfig, go to startup tab, uncheck undesirable programs) and get rid of programs that you don't need. Sometimes these are little spybot programs that cause pop ups. Make sure and be careful here though. Google the programs first to make sure you should remove them. Try these steps to get rid of spyware, junk, nasty pop ups and also speeds up your system. Good Luck.

You remove it by going to add/remove programs in the control panel, or Start -> run -> appwiz.cpl and hit enter.
Screw Norton or McAfee, go with AVG Free 7.5. install in, reboot into safe mode after updating it, and run a complete scan. In safe mode you are more likely to have success in removing viruses.
To go into safe mode, turn on your computer, and hit the F8 key until you get the Windows boot menu, choose safe mode. It will look funny, but after you get rid of any viruses you have, reboot and just let it go to boot to normal mode.

You did not say what you had. Go to control panel, then to add and delete programs to delete your bad antivirus programs. Then reboot.
Then log in, go to the bottom URL, to download a free 15 day trial of Norton's antivirus program. Then I think you have to reboot again.
Then log in, and run Norton's. With my computer it takes 2 hours and some.
The second URL is to join CNet and EXCELLENT forum to learn
