24 yds - 21 3/4 yds = 2 1/4 yds
3 pieces each 3 1/2 yards = 10 1/2 total yards
5 pieces each 2 1/4 yards = 11 1/4 total yards
10 1/2 yards + 11 1/4 yards = 21 3/4 total yards removed from the 24 yard cloth which will leave you with 2 1/4 yards.

2 and 1/4 yards are left.
Okay...you start with 24 yds...subtract (3 X 3 1/2 =10 1/2)...so subtract 10 1/2 from 24 and you are left with 13 and 1/2 yards...you then subtract (5 X 2 1/4 = 11 1/4)....you then subtract 11 1/4 from 13 1/2 = 2 and 1/4 yards.

1yd = 3 feet
24 yd is 72 feet.
3.5 yd = 10.5 feet
3x10.5 = 31.5
72-31.5 = 40.5 feet would be left
or 13.5 feet.
granted that we are talking about an equal width of material. (this is in length)

3 x 3.5 = 10.5 yards
5 x 2.25 = 11.25 yards
10.5 + 11.25 = 21.75 yards removed.
24 - 21.75 = 2.25 (or 2 1/4) yards remaining
