It's sad to see that. My wish is that if President Bush could be homeless for a week, he would understand that our tax money is better used for our country and our homeless people.

It's a common question, and a lot of people ask the same thing all the time. It's all about politics, and though I think we should be focusing on our country instead of everywhere else, I make a slight attempt to look at both angles.
You have to realize that some people who are welfare cases (not all) get those benefits and milk the system so they don't have to do a thing, and people like me who need it can't because I make enough to pay rent . . . its never ending. I can't feel 100% sorry for everyone since the bad ones are the reason that struggling families can't get any help at all . . .
My perspective is that maybe (since I'm not a politician or very knowledgable) they try to keep the wars from coming here, and the way the government is set up, only the almost destitute can get help. I'm making about 20000-22000 a year right now, and can't get government help because I "make too much" but can't put my kids in daycare because I can't afford it. I can't get food stamps but my checks barely cover rent, bills, diapers, food, gas, etc. It's a big problem.
Another issue is that the big politicians aren't going to help. It's all about "politics" with them, and they rarely can do anything to fix one issue. It's weird, but some countries that have country wide insurance based on your income or w/e are very smart. I'm suprised we don't have it, but I think it's because our country is all about money and profit. That's the bottom line. We make money (the country/gvmnt not necissarily us cuz id be rick) off of necessities that we can't live without, but have to afford somehow. The pharmacies do make medicines that could help people but they make so much money off of them, that they aren't going to give them out ~ greedy ~ and this applies to almost every single area including wars. (how much money do they make now that gas prices are higher? how much money off of war and support our troops stickers are they making? ) i want to support our troops, but won't buy it because I am not going to throw anymore money than taxes at a government that refuses to help me when I desperately need it.
Also, some people that are homeless are there for so many different reasons! Some are destitute, some are alchoholics or drug addicts, some are down and out, and some might want to get a home and better things but some might not! I mean, it would be great if the gvnm't would fix it, but maybe giving them work or a temporary home would be more helpful so they can get back on their feet. As much as I sympathize, I can only do so much when I'm barely keeping what I have going right now!
I dunno, I'm babbling, but just remember the question you asked can be taken so many ways, and is going to be bombed with opinions . . .

The vast majority of homeless, especially men, suffer from mental illness.

As others have said, what does one have to do with the other. I think the person who said "because we have a republican in the white house" was the funniest. I remember back when Clinton was president, there were no homeless people anywhere. Then all of a sudden in January of '01 they were everywhere. Damn republicans. I just wonder where old Bill was storing them during his eight years.

the reason most homeless exist is bc psych hospitals were closed down all over the US and the people who were patients were just let go on the streets. If you are a new homeless person that means you screwed up your life into extinction. there is no reason for someone to go homeless now a days with welfare and sec 8. if you can't find a job you like your dumb @ss better find a job you don't like before you start complaining about no place to live. i had to take a housekeeping job for a while and hated every minute of it BUT I KEPT MY APARTMENT AND FOOD IN MY FRIDGE. Some people just seem to think they're 'too good' to do some jobs and their not.

First I would ask him why he's homeless. Most, not all, but most have put themselves in that position. A lot are mentally ill, or alcohol/drug addicts.

I don't believe its the governments problem, its our society. The government is doing its job protecting its citizens with our tax dollars. My problem is with the guy on wall street who makes 500,000 a year, got a 120,000 bonus and drives a new BMW. He drives past those same homeless and couldn't care less. We as a people should ask ourselves how can I help?

Ask yourself. Don't ask why is the government not helping that man you saw, ask yourself why are you not helping that homeless man?

Yeah, you want to know why there are so many homeless people? Because liberals, like yourself, decided that mental hospitals were bad things. So they either put them out gave them their medications and a prescription and said "good-bye." Many of those people had no way of functioning without the hospital and had no where to go but the street. Many did not take their medications. Yet, liberals believe that people, who are incapable of making a lucid decision, have the right not to take their medication and to live on the streets if they want to. But, now you want to blame this President when you people started putting them out on the street decades ago.

Well seeing how the homeless need jobs, why not get rid of the illegal immigrants so that we could give the homeless those jobs and put them on the steps towards at least a better life, and a chance to make some money.

You ask a good question to which there is no answer. In a capitalist society, every one is given a chance to excel. Those that are unable to do so are cast by the wayside. In a communist society, this would not be the case. However, there never was, and there never will be, a true communist society. Why not? Because I have my DVD player and my cell phone and my Lexus and my creature comforts, and I don't want to lose them if it means giving those things up to benefit a total stranger. And I use the term "I" merely as a figure of speech.

good question... But the homeless in this cuntry have as many oppurtunities as the rest of the people here.

And they have made it so hard to get a job, it is really easy to become homeless too.

Good question man... and it's more like "Billions (with a B) on a war." Why do we spend billions on a war when our public schools are pieces of garbage? why do we spend billions on a war when our environment is suffering from the effects of air pollution? Why don't we use some of that money to reduce the deficit? Build more schools? It's mind-boggling...
