I have several wrestlers that I like: Hulk Hogan, Macho Man Randy Savage, The Ultimate Warrior, King Kong Bundy, Hillbilly Jim, George the animal Steele, and Superfly Jimmy Snuka. Of these 7 wrestlers you may notice a similarity. They were the superstars in the heyday of wrestling. These men and others like them paved the way for likes of Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, JBL, The Big Show and Eddie Guerrero (rip). But there are 2 wrestlers which are tied, in my opinion for the best of all time.
The first is Andre the Giant. No other wrestler in the history of sports entertainment was as popular, as well recognized or as dominating as the Giant. He WAS wrestling for a very long time. No one could ever beat him. Until Wrestle-mania 3. It was the unmovable object (Andrea) against the unstoppable force (Hogan) in a very controversial match. Hogan later said after Andre had passed away, "You only win a match against the Giant when he says you can." It had been decided prior to the match that Hogan would win. Andre agreed and saw the need for a new champion. However, during the match, Hogan got a little bit too cocky for Andre. On Hogan's first attempt to body slam Andre, he fell beneathe the enormus weight. For just a moment, Andre was telling Hogan "You will win when I say it's time and not before." If you watch the old tapes of wrestle-mania 3, you will see that the ref stopped his count at two but Hogan was down for the three count. Andre didn't have to lose, he chose to for the good of the company. It still remains one of the most amazing matches in wrestling history. Andre the Giant. A man who's heart was as big as he was.
The second favorite is tied with Andre for an entirely different reason. His stage presence and longevity is second to none. His entry music is second to none. His following during the times he was hated and loved is second to none. And his ability to hold a crowd in a state of suspense and sheer excitement is second to none. I give you ..... THE UNDERTAKER!! No other wrestler before him, or I dare say after him, has ever had such amazing ability for a big man. His story line for the creation of his character was amazing. What a perfect name for his manager "Paul Bearer". His ability to roll his eyes back in his head made his character even more believable. The urn that Paul Bearer carried which held the strength of the Undertaker. The famous last words "Rest In Peace" is greater than anything the Rock ever said. The whole persona of the dead man that could be knocked off his feet but not knocked out. Lying on the mat as other wrestlers walked around him believing they had beaten him and then for him to raise up as though he was rising from the dead. His closing moves, the choke slam to hell, the tombstone, the last ride. All amazing. Others may imitate the dead man (the Bogey Man) but none could ever match him.
Ladies and gentlemen. It is my distinct pleasure and honor to give you the two greatest wrestlers of ALL TIME ...
Andre the Giant!
and
The Undertaker!
