I've noticed it a few times now, that some Americans make jokes about British people's teeth and say they have bad teeth. Why do some say this? I don't understand it. I'm English and I have a great set of teeth.

The saying stems from WWII when the Brit's and Americans worked together as allies. Back then, America was more advanced in the dental arena. Now, Brits have just as much of an advantage as Americans in the dental fields so the bash holds no meaning anymore. Americans get their share of bashing from the Brits, too, sister! The thing is to not take it too seriously.

Yes I have heard this remark made about the British, which is so not true. The last two summers when I have been in America I have been looking at American people's teeth and I think they are much worse than the British people's teeth. I remember saying to an American guy I was staying with, you would look much nicer if you had your teeth seen to. The only people that seem to have good teeth there are either the movie stars, and they are most probably not real in any case or the black people and that does make up 12 % of American population. So maybe I should spread the news that Americans have worse teeth than the British, as some horrible liar has been spreading lies about the British which is so not true.

Okay so like, England has been around since dental care wasn't something most people paid attention to, so like when dental care was just beginning to become a big thing, our society was like just getting established too so in our eyes(america) when we'd see someone with less than perfect teeth it was like "whoa! dental care much?!?" even though it's was like totally normal to the rest of the world, but back when we were an even more young and naive country, it was just like shocking I guess to see someone with less than perfect teeth and I guess those stereo types just kinda stuck:/ I don't know why. I have a giant gap in my teeth btw haha

Americans are ignorant, it's just that simple.
I have a lot of friends and family that live in England and Scotland...their teeth are better than the crackheads teeth here in America.
Americans hear something and they all jump on the bandwagon assuming it to be true.
Ummm...take a look at Jude Law, Keira Knightly, Hugh Grant, the Beckhams....Christ, they all have great teeth and are from Britain..hmmm????

I've heard this stereotype before too and it always bothered me. I've never even been to England or Britain, but I know people from there, and not all of them have bad teeth, some have very nice teeth. It's just another dumb, twisted, negative, and condescending stereotype that should just go away, very much like the stereotype of all Americans being "fat" and eating junk food all the time. I'm American and I'm almost too thin, not just by U.S. standards either, and I don't even like junk food and eat fast food hardly ever.

Well, back in the day, like 30+ years ago, taking care of your teeth was not as important as it is today, in the US or across the pond. Now doctors can look at your teeth and if they notice gingivitis it could be a sign of something else more serious. Just look at Austin Powers teeth...It's probably more stereotypical than anything.

Ive actually never heard a joke about British teeth except in the Austin Powers movies. So if you want to blame something blame that because thats probably where they are all coming from.

Many British people have "discolored" teeth, probably due ot the water there in the UK. The water here in the US has so many chemicals that our teeth appear whiter. Pay no attention to those people, they just don't understand what true beauty is. I love you Brits!

Why? Ignorance. I'm sure that not every British person has bad teeth.

I've noticed this too. However you must admit a lot of British people do have bad teeth and they have access to free dentistry. Therefore many do not understand why they do….
